Local Area
Vera is a small town approximately 10 km from the coast although the municipality extends to the sea shore where, a tourist settlement, known as Vera Playa, has been developed. Originally called Baria and located at Villaricos (Rich Village, due to the silver mining industry) Vera relocated in the 13th century. The Christian conquest in 1488, an earthquake in 1518 and the Moorish rebellion in 1568 have all contributed to the character of the town. Legend has it the old town was buried after the earthquake and that an arrow was fired. The existing town grew from where it landed.
Vera has a particularly attractive tree-lined town square, Plaza Mayor, with a central fountain, boutiques and street cafés. There are several buildings of historical interest: the Town Hall, 16th and 17th century, The Convent de los Padres Mínimos, 17th century, the Church of the Encarnación, 16th century, built as a fortress to protect the village against pirates, Church of San Agustín, 16th century and the Chapel of Nuestra Señora de las Huertas, 19th century. The Plaza de Toros, Bullring, built in 1879, is the setting for many fiestas, bull fighting and other cultural displays. There are many wonderful pieces of architecture and folklore to be explored, much of which is lovingly explained in the Ethnographic and Archaeological Museum.
Vera Playa now forms the main economic activity of Vera and is itself divided into various small areas which locals refer to when identifying a particular location. Las Buganvilleas, Pueblo Laguna and Puerto Rey are the best known and most popular areas.
Since 1990, Vera Playa has developed into an important centre for naturism There are several apartment complexes, including Natsun, La Manera, Bahia de Vera and Vera Natura, where naturism is officially permitted, and about two kilometres of beach have been reserved for their use. The only naturist hotel in Spain, the Vera Playa Club Hotel, is also located in Vera Playa.
Saturday is market day in Vera town centre where you can find a huge assortment of goods being offered for sale and is arguably one of the best street markets in the area. The local bars & restaurants offer a welcome respite with an array of tapas and pastries, as well as very varied meal options, to suit all palates.
