The City beaches and
the beaches of Almeria bay
Almeria City, the capital of the province, lies on a headland within a wide bay with the Poniente beaches to the south west and the Cabo de Gata cape to the south east.
The city of Almeria is a much appreciated tourist destination with many attractions and historical buildings, its beautiful beaches are certainly the most frequented of the region, though it is still possible to find an isolated spot outside of the city limits.
The main city beaches run the length of the western coastline of the peninsula, the eastern shoreline being home to the more rural beaches which stretch to the resorts of El Toyo and Retamar, located just outside the Cabo de Gata Natural Park.

Not just for beach holidays, the resort beaches and city beaches are perfectly located for many of Almerias other attractions...

Quick links to the Beaches of Almeria bay:
In this page I would like to share photos and details of the busy city beaches, the resort beaches of El Toyo and Retamar, and of some of the equally lovely yet lesser known beaches along the bay.
Starting in the west, along the N-340a Carretera de Malaga coast road, en route to Almeria city and port, I will begin where I left Playa del Palmer, the last of the Poniente beaches...
West of Almeria port
Playa de la Garrofa
Leaving the Poniente municipality of Enix the cliff road winds along the coastline towards the city of Almeria offering some fabulous views of the Mediterranean sea. There are a couple of isolated rocky coves along this stretch but the main rural beach, Playa de la Garrofa, consisting mostly of sand with some pebbles, is located at the base of a sheltered bay. Access is signposted from the main road via the La Garrofa camp site.
Across from la Garrofa, by the side of the roadway, there are a couple of restaurants nestled into the rock face offering alternative surroundings to the bustling establishments in the city.
If camping is your thing this is an agreeable spot in a quiet beach front location close to the resort of Aguadulce and Almeria city centre.

Playa Las Olas
Where the coast road reaches the city and just before the port of Almeria, the quiet beach of Las Olas, mainly of dark sand and without any services, is tucked in a corner away from the lively centre.
Almeria city beaches
List of Almeria city beaches:
- Playa San Miguel
- Playa Las Conchas
- Playa Zapillo
- Playa Palmeral
- Playa de la Termica
- Playa de Puerto Pino
- Playa Nueva Almeria
- Playa del Rio
The clear blue sea within the bay of Almeria washes onto the white sandy shores of the well maintained city beaches which cannot be faulted for their cleanliness. Each beach an extension of the other, they are separated by breakwaters and have their own designated parking zones. All are close to the street cafes, bars and restaurants of the city. Visited by locals and tourist alike with a mix of families, young, and young at heart, the beaches offer sports areas for volleyball, and play areas for children. The promenade, which ends just before Playa del Rio, is dotted with ice cream and cold drinks kiosks. Playa del Rio is located on the outskirts of the city, serviced by one busy beach chiringuito, parking is available on a rocky area next to the beach.
While I have made a big deal out of the fact that the beaches of this beautiful province are uncrowded, I have to admit that the city beaches are reasonably busy, particularly at the waters edge, though it must be said that somehow, even here, in the heart of the city, the atmosphere is relaxed and life takes on a slow easy pace.
Rural beaches and resort beaches...
Playa El Bobar / La Cañada
Leaving Almeria city centre on the ALP-812 coast road towards Cabo de Gata finds this rural, narrow yet mainly sandy stretch of beach which runs for over one kilometre along the coastline. The beach offers an almost deserted alternative to the city beaches, it length is followed by the Paseo de Ribera, a very pretty palm tree lined promenade with a separate cycle path.
Playa Costa Cabana
A quiet beach of sand and pebbles beside the peaceful seaside town of Costa Cabana, there are shower facilities and plenty of wide open space for a restful time by the seashore.
Playa Alquian
A rural beach of approximately two and a half kilometres in length, signposted from the AL-3113, access is via a track road through a remote area of scrubland. The far reaching fine white sands are lapped by a dazzling aquamarine sea.
Considering its secluded location I did encounter people on this beach, about ten in total, taking into account the length of the beach, it is safe to say this is a 'get away from it all' destination in total contrast to the city beaches.
There are no services so take supplies.
El Toyo and Retamar resort beaches
Playa El Toyo and Playa Retamar
The purpose built urbanisations of El Toyo and Retamar are almost merged into one resort though each has their own separate beach. The area is very low key and in a prime location to appreciate both city life and the delights of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park, Retamar being the gateway to the beaches along the parks southern coastline. Both El Toyo and Retamar are easily reached from the N-344, with Almeria airport only a fifteen minute drive away. The quality urbanisations of the resorts include apartments, townhouses and villas, offering accommodation for both holidays and year round living in a beach front location close to the prestigious Alboran Golf Club.
Alboran golf club El Toyo
El Toyo beach
The striking sandy beach is reached via the wooden decked walkways of a tasteful garden area which has two covered look out points, one at either end of the beach, providing shaded seating with stunning views out to the Mediterranean sea. Parking is plentiful and convenient. For most of the year the beach remains peaceful and uncrowded, only getting busier in the main Spanish holiday month of August and the summer weekends.
Retamar beach
The beach at Retamar, consisting of sand and shingle, has easy access from the promenade. It is serviced by a chiringuito beach bar that provides sun beds, parasols and refreshments to beachgoers, and while this section of beach can get quite busy in the summer months, the expansive sands, which extend to Playa Torre Garcia in the Cabo de Gata, offer plenty of uncrowded space.
It is worth noting that it can be quite breezy along this stretch of the coastline, often creating strong waves.
Almeria bay provides a diverse choice of beaches, the key here, in my opinion, is location, the relatively small stretch of coastline offers easy access to both Almeria city centre and the amazing Cabo de Gata region.
