Costa Almeria - beach guide
The word Costa evokes the image of fun in the sun on crowded beaches, of high rise hotels, and of mass tourism.
Almeria costa is NOT typical of this image, its coastline is probably one of the least crowded and one of the most spectacular in Spain.
The beaches of Almeria can be categorised into four geographical areas.
The first, the Levante, and the second, the beaches of the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata-Nijar, both areas are, without doubt, unspoilt, uncrowded and simply stunning.
From long sandy bays with aquamarine waters, to hidden coves sheltering isolated white beaches. Traditional fishing villages, instead of high rise hotels, still line the seashores.
The Levante beaches offer a perfect blend of rural and resort beaches.
The beaches of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park are in a area of protection, a place where nature is of key importance. Many of these beaches are so isolated they can only be reached on foot, their natural beauty is well worth the effort required to reach them.
The third and fourth coastal regions, the Poniente, and the Bay of Almeria is home to the more touristy area of Almeria, particularly in the summer season.
These beaches offer a fabulous all round holiday destination with quality resorts that remain typically Spanish in tradition.
Not without their own idyllic hideaways, unspoilt and deserted beaches are in close proximity to the hum of the holiday spots.
All of the resort beaches in Almeria are well maintained, many proudly flying the EU Blue Flag, and offering all the amenities one would expect from an awarded beach, life guards, red cross services, water sports, play areas for children, showers, and plenty of bar and restaurant facilities.
Uncrowded for most of the year they often get busy in peak season, particularly August, the month when most Spaniards take their main holiday, and the resorts become filled with Spanish holiday makers from this province and inland Spain.

The Waters off the Coast of Almeria
Almeria's seashores are of the well loved Mediterranean, perhaps less known, the beaches of the Ponienete and the bay of Almeria are on the Alboran sea. The Alboran is the western most part of the Mediterranean sea, it brings water from the Atlantic ocean into the Mediterranean, as well as a large population of Bottlenosed Dolphins which can be spotted along the coast.
The waters off the coast of Almeria are clear as crystal, they include a one hundred and twenty square kilometre marine reserve off the Coast of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park where the rocky reefs come alive with colourful sea life, scuba diving and snorkelling are extremely popular here.
There are beaches suitable for a variety of water sport on the Almeria coastline, sailing, canoeing, kayak, windsurfing and kitesurfing, fishing and of course swimming.
Naturist beaches in Almeria
Naturism in Almeria
It is not illegal to be naked in Spain, consequently there is a fairly relaxed attitude towards it on many of the beaches of Almeria, particularly the more isolated ones. Several beaches are classified nudist, and while many people choose to wear swim suits on these beaches, others may not.
Naturist Beaches
The most well known nudist beach in Almeria is the Levante beach of El Playazo Vera Playa, here not only the beach is naturist, there is a designated area of the resort which includes urbanisations, restaurants, and bars that are also naturist.

The other naturist beaches of the Levante are Mojacar's Playa el Sombrerico and Playa Granatilla.

Cabo de Gata is home to most of the naturist beaches in Almeria, Cala Media Luna, Cala Barronal, Cala Chica, Cala San Pedro, Cala del Plomo, Cala de Enmedio... on these more rural beaches of Cabo de Gata nudism is practised and widely accepted.
On some of the more frequented Cabo de Gata beaches, such as Playas de los Genoveses, Playa de Monsul, Playa de los Muertos, and Playa Agua Amarga, nudists and textiles share the beach sin problema.

Of the Poniente beaches there are only two, covering a remote and beautiful coastal area between the resorts of Roquetas and Almerimar, Playa de Punta Entinas and Playa Cerrillos.

You possibly already know that the Spanish word for beach is playa, but it also worth noting that the Spanish word for cove is cala and promenade is paseo. Furthermore the term chiringuito refers to a traditional bar restaurant, often a simple wooden hut structure, situated on or at the edge of the beach, they can look at little ramshackled which only adds to the authenticity of the venue.
These terms will be used a lot in the following pages which provide information on the best beaches in Almeria.
